“and in its place—: An Ode to Frankenstein” is a celebration of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, the first science fiction story ever known to the Western world, which also celebrates its bicentennial this year. The project attempts to negotiate between several generic styles known to nonfiction—the memoir/personal essay, the academic meditation often used in the recent advances in the creative nonfiction genre, and the interweaving of older texts with newer texts. Written in short, titled vignettes that do not proceed in chronological order, the book moves through two major intersections of Frankenstein and my own life’s connections to the Frankenstein saga, including the real narratives of Mary Wollstonecraft, Mary Shelley, Percy Shelley, and the other relationships that become part of the Shelleys’ story.
Addie Tsai teaches courses in literature, creative writing, and humanities at Houston Community College, and received her MFA from Warren Wilson College and her doctorate in Dance at Texas Woman’s University. Her writing has been published in Banango Street, The Offing, The Collagist, The Feminist Wire, and has written a queer Asian young adult novel called “Dear Twin.” She is an editor at The Grief Diaries and at The Flexible Persona.
